FIFA says no
The governing body for world soccer, FIFA, rejected the Egyptian request to replay its qualifying match against Algeria. The Egyptian request was based on the hooliganism of the Algerian crowd during the match, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The match was delayed for nearly 15 minutes after the Egyptian goal, as fans threw objects onto the field. In its ruling, FIFA officials say they have carefully reviewed the videotape of the incident, and found that none of the objects had hit any of the players.
The FIFA ruling means the team's final, last-ditch hope has been dashed, and that Egypt will not be participating in the 2002 World Cup.
Egypt had to have won the Algeria contest by a margin of at least 3 goals in order to have qualified for a berth in the prestigious international tournament. The team that did qualify from Egypt's group was Senegal, and Al-Wafd reports that after FIFA made its decision, the Egyptian team immediately offered its congratulations to Senegal. Also, just to state its position, the Egyptian soccer federation submitted a letter to FIFA, objecting to the decision not to replay the match, but fully aware that the decision was final.
See you in 2006!
Palestinians participate in Arab horse festival
The 10th International Arabian Horse festival began this week in Sharqiya governorate. The festival will include horse displays and competitions. Dozens of Egyptian, Arab and international sporting clubs and official horse-breeding, training and racing organizations are participating, including, for the first time in the festival's history, and despite the strenuous circumstances back home, a Palestinian delegation.

Amitab is coming after all
Stop the presses... now it looks like Indian superstar actor Amitab Bachhan is indeed on his way to Egypt, to be honored at the Alexandria Film Festival, which is set to begin later this month. The news came after weeks of speculation as to whether or not Bachan would be coming.
Al-Ahram reports that Bachan will be arriving on the 12th of September -- the last time the Indian superstar came to Egypt he was mobbed by fans. But that was at the height of the Indian movie craze in Egypt -- these days people are more nuts about American and Egyptian films...
The paper also reports that Bachan's wife -- Indian actress Jaya Bhaduri -- will be the head of the festival's jury.
Last year Bachan was set to star in a live concert at Cairo stadium that was cancelled at the last minute...

Spain turns out to be Egypt
Typical. After making us wait for weeks to find out what the teaser ads indicating that soccer star Hossam Hassan was about to announce some Spain-related news (was he about to be signed by Real Madrid?), we find out that he's merely the spokesperson for a new Northern Mediterranean coast resort called "The Spanish Village". Located on kilometer 189 of the coastal highway, the resort boasts that its scenic vista was chosen by both Hossam Hassan, and German military leader Rommel (a pun on the fact that Rommel's battle against Montgomery during WWII took place at nearby Al-Alamein).
The series of ads that have been running in the papers for weeks are an example of the teaser campaign method chosen by many a company -- and like most of this style of ads, this one featured way tou much hype for the substance that was eventually delivered... Also, one wonders, why are they entering the market at the end of the summer holiday season?

Adel Imam meets Bashar
Veteran superstar Adel Imam got a hero's welcome in Damascus this week, where he is showing his current play Bodyguard to an enthusiastic Syrian audience. Imam met with young Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, and several high-ranking Syrian cabinet ministers attended the play. Thousands of Syrians, says Al-Ahram, have also been gathering in and around the hotel Imam is staying at in Damascus, just to catch a glimpse of the star.
